I make under glaze blue
enamelled porcelain in
the style of Kutam Ware
which I studied in
Japan I start the
decoration with a tissue paper
and charcoal pattern
transfer system to get
the geometric design
onto the biscutted pot
and complete the fish,
animals and birds free-
hand in pencil. These
are then painted m under
glaze blue, glazed and
fired to 1270° c.
The design is completed with enamels
and
sometimes gold, and fired for a
third time to
840°'c. I have various
sea creature designs
with dolphins, a coral reef and
Northern waters
as illustrated, I do a variety of
bird and deer in
forest designs and worked on a North
African
theme inspired by a
commission of ceramic
wall pieces for the
Medina Restaurant of the
new P&0 liner "Aurora".
Recently the Spode
factory have reproduced
some of my designs
as limited editions &
derivative works back
stamped "Russell
Coates by Spode "as part
of their Natural
