Roger Cockram set up his own studio inn rural Devon in 1976, at first making mainly large thrown woodfired pottery, using locally dug base clays. His work now centres on the movement, colours and texture of water, and the influence of water on the surrounding plants and animals.

This results in various vessel forms, often quite large, sometimes incised or with modelling and painting. Frequently, Roger uses several sponged layers of vitreous slips and matt and dry glazes, which bleed up through one another giving a sense of depth to the surface.

All the work is once-fired in an increasingly reducing atmosphere to about cone 11 (above 1300 degrees!).
